Shoot-Out

2006-Oct-3 by Laughcalvin

The thing about watching athlectic commercials or sports films is that the game itself has to not only be played, and played well, but it also has to be choregraphed, shot, and edited well. Enter the sports shoe uber-commercial! Writer/Director/Producer David Branin has put together a very well-done short about a cynical hustler played by Tyshawn Bryant who gets challenged to play for a stranger's (Dan Sol) worldly possesions verses his, the hustler's, life. Anyone who has played basketball on a urban, suburban, or rural playground knows this scenario is not so far off. The fellas take it very seriously. Bryant and Sol can 'effin play b-ball and they are good actors to boot which made Branin's life a bit easier. He and DP Ivan Rodriguez  photograph the one-on-one action so the it feels real, and at points kick-ass. The structure is set up perfectly so that we don't know who's playing who till the last frame. "Shoot-Out" is a nice calling card for these guys' careers.
