Peter's Price

2006-Sep-12 by Laughcalvin

As any film lover knows, not all the shorts and features (no-budget, low-budget, blockbuster, third-world GNP) that get out into the world are worth watching. I don't mean that as elitist, not by a long-shot. All creative efforts have their value, if only to the filmmaker. HIT and other film promo/review sites have seen their share of flawed efforts (charitably viewed) and outright torturous drivel. (uncharitably viewed) So it's with a "Whooaahh" when we pop something in the player that's really good. Writer-Director Mitchell Cohen's short Peter's Price is good; really good. I could go on about the writing and direction which are pitch perfect; the acting by the leads Christopher Mur and James Aidan McCaffery which is subtle and well-timed; or the production design by Holly Roach, very striking in a low-budget short. But many films, long or short, have these various elements down pat but fail to move or surprize. True, you have to have a good or passable story / scene to begin with but again, I feel it comes down to something less tangible: Tone, or how you tell the story. Cohen has taken the mugging scene and elevated it by an assured sense of timing of what to put in and what to leave out. Well-done and prefectly paced all the way around. It has been in numerous festivals and you will be hearing from these filmmakers again.

The film was produced by Groupthink Entertainment in assoc. with 56 Films. Produced by Anna Salim and written and directed by Mitchell Cohen. email the filmmakers: Groupthinkent@aol.com
