Brick

The German Fantasy Film Fest handed out the First Blood award, for first or second-time directors. In the end it was a U.S. film that garnered the prize: Rian Johnson's film noir murder mystery "Brick," a high school mystery starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Bonnie J. Gordon reports....I watched the film on DVD Tuesday night. It was very well-written and stylish. At times it was almost interupted by being to clever by half but the film recovered fast and got back on track. I was really struck by Lucas Haas' performance as "The Pin." Very subtle and powerful yet funny. A helluva debut for Mr. Johnson.
