Why was Joe Strummer so great?

2006-Jul-28 by Laughcalvin

Joe Strummer.  What a voice.  What a songwriter.  What an artist.

I really liked The Clash's "London Calling", but for some reason never got around to his later work with the Mescaleros.  Wow, what I was missing.  The time between has only added to the depth and character of his work.

His last album "Streetcore" has quickly become my "deserted island" album.  A soulfully gritty voice; insightful, unique lyrics; all put into driving rhythms with influences from music around the world.  This album goes from driving rock to soulful ballads and ne'er a waffle between them.

Sadly, Joe left us too soon, dying suddenly in 2002.  RIP Joe, and thanks for the music.

A little HIT freebie, here is the opening track to "Streetcore":

What a great talent, no doubt. I always felt the Clash and Strummer did not become as big as their music deserved. They had such range. Maybe it was the Socialist leanings that turned some idiots off. Who knows? He is missed.
