The Jesus Camp

2006-May-11 by Laughcalvin

Rachel Grady's and Heidi Ewing's film won an award and acclaim at the recent Tribeca Film Festival, but more surprising, garnered genuine open discusion without some of the vitriol you might expect. Becky Fischer, the main subject of the doc and described as a nice, open, good-natured person, operates camps for Evangelical Christian children:

"All you have to do is mention words like abortion, homosexuality and President Bush to [garner] strong feelings from people," said Fischer who maintained that using images of the U.S. President, and the flags of the U.S. and Israel were not meant to be overtly political. "We are commanded to pray for our leaders and we're commanded [by the Bible] to pray for Israel. So it was a surprise to me because we don't think of this as political. But from a secular point-of-view, I can see how it's viewed politically."

Hmmm...it's hard for me to really think openly about this as I was raised this way but tell us what you think about it? Is it similar to the Madras in the Mid-East Islamic world or just  econo-religious biz as usual in America? Chime in. (indiewire)

I think there's a scene where they do 10 Hail Marys for Barbara Boxer and 15 for Ted Kennedy.
