Cruise Control

2006-May-5 by Laughcalvin

It would be a stretch to say that Tom Cruise needs a hit..what this guy needs is an intervention," writes N.Y. Times critic Manohla Dargis in her review of Mission: impossible III. "[He needs] someone who can help the star once known as Tom Terrific return to the glory days, when the only things most of us really knew about him came from the boilerplate continually recycled in glossy magazines, sealing him in a bubble of blandness and mystery. In those days, we didn't know that inside the world's biggest movie draw lurked a reckless couch-jumper and heartless amateur pharmacologist . [You] have to wonder if the real mission in his newest film isn't the search for the damsel in distress or the hunt for the supervillain, but the resurrection of a screen attraction who has, of late, seemed a bit of a freak.

I think Ms. Dargis is the best critic in America but..I'm gonna go out on a limb here and defend ol Tom. Why do we build up someone and then drop them like a mildewed dishrag when they, god forbid, be human? I know there is a rich tradition of killing our gods (God) but don't act so shocked when a Royal, Billionaire, Celebragod, acts weird. For fuck's sake, they are different! Artist, and I feel that Royals, Billionaieres, and Celebragods are artist of what form or another even if they are only bullshit artist, are supposed to act crazy, immoral, psycho. Come'on. Isn't that why we are obsessed with them? Perhaps it's that same obsession that makes us get sick of them. I know the corporate machine also has alot to answer for as well, but they are only peddling what we are buying. And Tom is still the biggest, most powerful, richest f****** star in Hollywood. For now.

he's been such a big star for so long that people (some) have been waiting for the moment to pounce on him, so yeah, maybe a bit unfair, but, hey, admit it, he's turning out to be the "king freak" among those that are more freakish than the general public... the dude is just plain wacked! btw, blogmaster, whats on your plate for cinco de mayo?? quality time with the missus?

I wouldn't mind if a few more puppies in his dog house stop barking. Like posing nude with Suri and Jason Alexander or start channeling L Ron Hubbard at Bar Mitzvahs..really go nuts, jacko Nuts, you know?

Cinco De Mayo? What's that?

Not much. The In-laws are still here. Are you out after sundown per usuall?

Does grammar/syntax/spelling mean anything to anyone anymore? Am I the only one who cares about the rules? Mark it a zero, Dude!

-sorry- little tangent there. In regard to Cruise, I can't believe you're defending this guy. He's the poster boy for a pay-as-you-climb cult, purveyor of bloated blockbuster fluff, and wielder of incredible power (having a show that called him on his Tomfoolery taken off the air- hey, the Pope doesn't even demand South Park respect him).

How can you defend him? He's the antithesis of indie film, wrapped up in his box office supported idol-like existence. Apparently, you're saying he has license to act the way he does. While you're right to a degree, it doesn't mean we can't dislike him for it.

I will give Cruise credit for doing his own stunts. Then again, most of those stunts are of the "publicity" kind.

KYJoe,

You remind me of the middle school teacher who told Henry Miller to "follow the rules or give up writing." The Elegant Variation; To wit: "Fowler's term for the inept writer's overstrained efforts that focus on grammatical syntax over style and substance."

Just because you follow the rules does not mean you're remotely interesting.

That's that.

To Cruise: He's a driven, egotistical actor at the top of the heap. He doesn't have to be a nice or sane guy if he doesn't feel like it. My point is yes, we don't have to like him but a helluva alot of people do.

Those who don't play up things that by Hollywood standards are relatively normal. Who can knock a guys religion? Jumping on couches? Who gives a f***? Protecting his image? Like the Pope doesn't? That would explain letting pedophiles run amoke for centuries I suppose.

Last, think about his supporting role in Magnolia. He was awesome.
