Remember VHS vs. Beta? A Tech Battle Royale is Brewing Again!

2006-Mar-24 by Laughcalvin

That's right: Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD!  For the right to replace that lovable but obsolete DVD. Forces are aligning. This should be a good one.

In this corner, with a  memory capacity of 50 gigs, Blu-ray: backed by its inventor, Sony, and Dell, Hitachi, Hewlett-Packard, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung and other IT equipment producers.

But, as the format will have a big word to say in the movie industry, the movie studios supporting it are also important. So far, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Walt Disney declared their support for Blu-Ray. The format had also two of the major game companies announcing their support: Electronic Arts and Vivendi.

And in this corner, with probable earlier release and cheaper prices, HD-DVD: supported by Toshiba, the inventor and main supporter, and NEC, but, on the other hand, it's backed by more movie studios: Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros and New Line Cinema.

THE BLU-RAY PROTOTYPE

Notice the titles here. Lawrence of Arabia with Stuart Little 2 and something called The chubbchubbs!?!?!? C'mon, Sony, that's cinema sacrilege!

But wait! There's one more contender on the horizon (as in the Land of the Rising Sun) which will be joining the fray: the HVD, which stand for Holographic Versatile Disc- yes they're using holographs now- insane. The memory on the HVD? 1 TB. 1 TB? I don't even know what that is. Tetrabyte? I think that's 1000 gigs, people! I don't think the Stones have even played a 1000 gigs... Actually, let me take that back. They probably have.

All in all, should be quite  a war.  Let's just hope we consumers don't get  massacred in the crossfire.
