The Platform Jaman

2007-Oct-30 by Laughcalvin

Most folks know that many indie films do not get the distribution they often (but not always) deserve. But did you know that less than 1% of ALL films made get US disribution?!? Jaman founder Gaurave Dhillion found it as wacky as we do and set up  an internet distribution platform. ""If people want 'Spiderman' or 'Shrek,' there are a hundred places to get that," Dhillon said. "This is where people come for stuff that is a little more edgy."

There is a revolution in media on the net no doubt, but are the end-users really ready for it? "I think I worry more about apathy in the younger set," Dhillon said. "Will they care about a beautiful film like 'Death to the Tinman' or will they be watching someone put a Mentos in a coke bottle on YouTube?" I agree. You can lead a horse (re: jackass) to water but can you make it drink? Like the current platforms and distribution models, it will most likely be a numbers game. Jaman will have to identify folks who seek out good work and sign up as many members as possible to get a return on the 8 million invested so far.

The platform will be great for filmmakers, actors, etc. however. "We can make it a place where industry executives go to look for new talent. YouTube is too random and our individual postings on websites are too hard to find."
