August Blues
2007-Aug-16 by Laughcalvin
Sometimes, when I've had too much to drink, I find myself cursing Hollywood, and those yuppie freaks who do not know who I am, and the hired lawyers waiting for me in the dark, and even the bloggers, lost in glory or utterly unknown, but then I relax and I can't help laughing.
You have to live your life; that's a fact. A drunk I met one time in North Carolina told me so.
Hollywood is crap

i came upon a ledge and looked over;
it was cliff from which the bottom could not be seen;
i turned to go back, but realized
there was nothing for me from where i came,
so i jumped, and felt freer than i had ever before;
for a while at least, until i hit bottom.
and damn, then it hurt like a son of a bitch.

anon- you hit the nail on the head.
LC- why the glumness? it's like steve carell's character says in "little miss..."
Frank: You know Marcel Proust? French writer. Total loser. Never had a real job. Unrequited love affairs. Gay. Spent 20 years writing a book almost no one reads. But he's also probably the greatest writer since Shakespeare. Anyway, he uh... he gets down to the end of his life, and he looks back and decides that all those years he suffered, Those were the best years of his life, 'cause they made him who he was. All those years he was happy? You know, total waste. Didn't learn a thing. So, if you sleep until you're 18... Ah, think of the suffering you're gonna miss. I mean high school? High school-those are your prime suffering years. You don't get better suffering than that.
-so maybe yer not 18- suffering years could go well into your 40s. butjust think of how much more you will have learned...

Pop culture itself is on the decline. I don't think anyone disputes that. And KY, you are comparing applues to oranges. Proust wrote classic lit; Hollywood makes disposable shit.

i really wasn't comparing anything.
my point was that LC was havin a bad day (like james blunt might say) but that hey (like frank says in "little miss sunshine" when bringing up proust's death bed sentiments) as artists we need to suffer through some difficult times in order to make us who we are - ultimately inspiring us to create masterpieces (ok it doesn't work for most).
and while i won't argue that proust's works weren't masterpieces, there's quite a bit of stuff made in hollywood that ain't shit. in fact, i'll have you know, that TV (reality garbage aside) is on the way back: The Office, 30 Rock, Big Love, Rescue Me, Weeds, Flight of the Conchords- all quality programs.
