IMAX On A Budget
2007-Jul-28 by
The average cost of filming an IMAX film is in the neighborhood of $6 million so when indie filmmaker Stephen van Vuuren decided to film his first IMAX film from inside his basement... Well, a lot of folks said it couldn't be done.
But vision can be an amazing motivater and such was the case with Stephen's vision Outside In. Despite being short on everything a filmmaker needs to make a great film-- especially an IMAX quality film-- Stephen pushes-on working from his basement and has developed a new film making process he calls 2.75D.
Using tools like Adobe Photoshop and some of his own creation, Stephen has managed to duplicate the IMAX process as he puts together thousands upon thousands of still photographs taken from NASA space flights and photos sent to him by "virtual extras."
Stephen is still way short of the estimated $500,000 needed to produce Outside In but he continues to work on the project while hoping for support. I'll be coming back to Stephen's efforts in future articles and hope HIT readers will be among those who help Stephen revolutionize the way IMAX films are made in the future.
