Maybe Not So Rich And Famous

2007-Jul-3 by

For almost 100 years people from all over the world have been flocking to Hollywood in hopes of striking it rich and becoming famous in the Golden State but have you ever thought perhaps the words, "Westward ho!" simply aren't being heard as loudly as they once were?

Take North Carolina, for example. North Carolina is the home to some of the biggest film studios outside of Hollywood with a thriving movie industry and film studios popping up everywhere. One such example is Eno River Media in Durham, North Carolina. What was that baseball movie filmed in Durham? Oh yeah, Bull Durham.

Unlike Hollywood which is a relatively young city, North Carolina is made up of cities 2, 3 and sometimes 4 times as old as Hollywood with lots of live backdrops, history, culture and art from which Hollywood is hundreds of years away. And like California you can climb a mountain and swim in the ocean on the same day. Add to that the fact that real estate is less than 1/4 the price of Southern California and you'll understand why even big name studios often look to North Carolina.

To be honest the ceiling in North Carolina isn't quite as high as Hollywood but then you've not as far to fall either.

PS. I almost forgot to mention the new Hollywood Shoppes is open for business.

Talent pool, talent pool, talent pool...kinda like real estate. Vancouver has filched some business from Los Angeles but not enough to cause tremors in the industry.
When it does, we will be right in front of you.

But ask yourself in the flyover states really want film production, botox, restricted parking, closed coffee shops, and unions(!) in their neighborhood??

Did you know NC is a right to work state?
No Unions!

For starters I am pro union.

Yes, I have dealt with "right to work" laws and the dismal lack of unions here in NC for my entire life but when I lived in California I had no union either. Nor Illinois, nor Minnesota, nor Texas.

That said, there are unions in NC. As a matter of fact some of our states film studios are unionized. Our unions are weak but when the industry moves here they will become strong.

Besides, our local and state governments are pouring millions of dollars into efforts to attract Indie Filmmakers, is California doing the same or are the industry mogels continuing to keep the indies crushed down?
