Wes Anderson dropped the ball, in my opinion, on The Life Aquatic (Amex commerical aside) It was flat, repetitive, and childish. I wondered if it was really Owen Wilson's writing contribution that accounted for characters and moments you cared about verses Anderson's stylized aesthetics. Then he got Baumbach to help out on TLA with bad results. Many accounts are coming in about his latest ,The Darjeeling Limited , being the same. Sure, we will give'em a chance but having read the script, I hoped there is some punching up in the editing room going on as we speak. Here's a photo to hold you over till, I believe December, when the film comes out.

damn, what a critic.
maybe you just didn't get the very low-key, underplayed Murray performance. maybe you scoffed at the shot of half the submarine with the exposed set (i thought it hilarious).
"tennenbaums" it wasn't but it was better than most of the rest of the stuff out there.

There comes a point when irony or 'hip depression' wear thin and unfortunately Murray hit the high note of it in Rushmore; No need to keep repeating it.
Plus, it only works when you actually care about the character.
They spent a meticulous amount of time and care (and $$$) on the set for TLA and I doubt Anderson meant people to laugh at it (perhaps 'with it?') like you did.
Then there is the whole chasing pirates thing: terrribly acted, filmed, and directed. I hope he does better on TDL.
