A Short or A Full-Length?
2007-Feb-27 by Laughcalvin
I've been mulling the question of whether to make a Pro (or semi-pro) short on high-end equipment using Professional actors or to make a no budget full-length feature with non-union actors that ,realistically speaking, might suffer in the production value. Filmmakers tend to have strong opinions about both approaches so let me hear from both camps about your experience making one or the other, or both as the case may be. What are the pros and cons, the challenges in pre, production, post, and distribution?

A well done feature can get you more publicity & more money (from screenings & through DVD sales) than a well done short. As far as I can see.
If you have a good feature script, take a segment of it and shoot it first as a short, & then once you get that out you can make the rest of the script & release a feature. Stranger Than Paradise was made that way. That might be the compromise solution.
Format won't matter (as long as it is at least 3 chip DV) as much as a good script, & good directing: good acting, good cinematography & sound, & good editing.

I was thinking of using a full-length script and shooting a scene from it and then try to raise the $$$ from said scene.
