Rant 'o the Week III: Cartoons and the Academy
2007-Feb-6 by KYJoe
OK- so I realize that perhaps it was not everybody's cup of tea, but I believe the vast majority of those who saw A Scanner Darkly would agree that it's one of the better films of the past year (see my review). Was it in a class with The Departed? No, of course not. But, should it be included alongside such fare as Cars and Happy Feet?... Hell, yes!
Do animated feature noms have to go to whatever Pixar project is released en masse that year? Do we have to salute only those animated films meant mainly for the kiddies? Does anyone really, truly care? Admittedly, I don't care that much, but, that said, I beseech the Academy to please consider these questions for the future.
Apparently when it comes to animated films, it's the big, bloated blockbusters that win out on the nominations. Sure Cars is a better film than say Poseidon but it seems to me that a different set of rules exists here.
Oh well, it is only the Oscar for Best Animated Feature and how much weight does that Oscar carry anyway?

It certainly was shabbily treated. Maybe the possible subject matter turned off old birds of the Academy..?

which i think was the point.
it's as if the audience is on the same shit the characters are on. sure- it's been done before but the execution here was great.
