"Quinceanera" Takes Two Awards at Sundance
2006-Jan-30 by Laughcalvin
Filmed in L.A.'s Echo Park neighborhood, Quinceanera, centers on the life of a Magdalena, played by Emily Rios. Magdalena must struggle with becoming pregnant at 15 and her family's subsequent ostracism of her. Leaving her immediate family, she is welcomed into the home of her great-uncle and gay cousin.
Quinceanera, which was written and directed by Wash Westmoreland and Richard Glatzer, took home both the festival's jury prize and the audience award for US dramatic films, the latter chosen in voting by Sundance movie-goers.
One thing that caught our attention about this film is that while it won an audience prize at Sundance, it received only a 4.7/10 rating from viewers on IMDB. Curious indeed.
