Taika Waititi Interview
2007-Jan-9 by Laughcalvin
Interviews with filmmakers can be touch and go; many are pretty much by the book, get-the-promo-info-out-there-about-my-movie kind of thing which can be kind of a yawner. Others are out there, as if the filmmaker and interviewer are about 7 drinks in. (I like those a lot!) Indiewire's interview with the utterly charming New Zealand by way of the Globe filmmaker Taika Waititi about his film "Eagle V. Shark", in competition at Sundance, lies somewhere in between:
"Did you attend film school?
I didn't attend film school because at the time we were so poor. But my friends have told me you don't learn much anyway. I must point out that they haven't been to film school either. I am a self-taught filmmaker. A big help in my self education was watching all the latest movies by Michael Bay and Brett Ratner. Now I know what to do and what not to do.
I'll watch his movie based on that statement alone. Go here to read the interview.
