The ecological and humanitarian horrors chronicled in 2004 documentary Darwin's Nightmare are first unleashed when a man with a bucket dumps a Nile Perch into the waters of Lake Victoria. The voracious fish runs rampant, dominating its surroundings, and soon the massive animal becomes the scourge of the local fishing industry. While the invasive species is not directly identified as the cause of the many problems that plague Tanzania — poverty, hunger, drug addiction, and prostitution — Austrian director Hubert Sauper does use it as a powerful metaphor for the dangers of unchecked capitalism.
