A Night at the The-a-ter
2006-Nov-15 by KYJoe
For those of you Angelenos interested in a charming one woman show by a member of one of Britain's most royal acting families, take a trip to the Mark Taper Forum downtown for a viewing of "Nightingale".
Sure some of you may scoff at the notion: "Why would I wanna unload 30-odd bucks to see some limey geriatric wobble about the stage for an hour-and-a-half?" I must admit that I shared these same sentiments. However, my ol lady twisted my arm... a lot (hey, football was on)... so I went.
I have to say I was quite surprised at what I found. Redgrave is truly a master of her craft, as a writer and actor. But not only that, she was captivating. By the end of the play I found myself shedding tears! She draws you into this story loosely based on the life of her grandmother with warmth and humor, and then introduces hardship and tragedy. We gain a respect for a woman who apparently was often moody and cold. And understand what events in her life made her that way.
So "kudos" I say to you, Ms. Redgrave. Splendid, indeed. By the way, for anyone interested in going, the curtains close for good on the 19th of this month. Sorry for the short notice.
